Tailor-Made Technical Solutions

No two molecules behave identically in Jet Milling and micronization processing. Starting particle size, Flowability, hardness, sensitivity to heat, tendency to agglomerate, bulk density, and electrostatic behaviour are among the multitude of variables that directly influence how a material responds to micronization. When these properties fall outside the range accommodated by a standard process configuration, the result is either an out-of-specification particle size distribution, reduced process yield, or both.

Addressing this challenge requires the ability to adapt the equipment — not just the process parameters — to the specific characteristics of each product. MicMac has developed the capability to configure and modify its processing equipment to match the material being processed, introducing a new level of flexibility that extends well beyond conventional contract micronization services.

This approach allows a multitude of both process and geometrical parameters to be introduced and optimised for each product individually. The milling chamber design can be configured for each substrate, enabling targeted adjustments to classification behaviour and particle size distribution without compromising containment or GMP compliance. Where specific particle characteristics like morphology requirements exist, mill geometries and operating conditions can be selected accordingly. Where extremely narrow and fine PSD targets are demanded — such as D100<5 μm for inhalation products — the process is built around that constraint from the outset.

This adaptability extends to the choice of milling technology itself. Depending on the material properties, the optimal approach may range from a spiral jet mill configuration for standard particle size reduction, to a fluidized bed opposed jet mill for applications requiring particularly narrow distributions, to cryogenic conditions for compounds that are temperature-sensitive or difficult to mill at ambient temperature or Oval jet mill for powders prone to amorphization, where a gentler particle-particle interaction can help preserve the material’s solid-state properties.

MicMac's tailor-made technical solutions translate directly into processing flexibility embedded at every stage of the service — from initial feasibility assessment through to commercial supply. Whatever the molecule, whatever the specification, the process adapts to the product.
