Particle Classification
Particle classification is a critical technical service focused on the segregation of pharmaceutical powders into specific fractions based on their aerodynamic diameter. This process is essential for achieving a narrow Particle Size Distribution (PSD), which is a key requirement for advanced delivery modalities such as pulmonary delivery via Dry Powder Inhalers (DPIs). Our classification services utilize dynamic systems to define precise cut-off points for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
These systems utilize a high-speed classifier wheel (or rotating basket) that creates a centrifugal stress field. Particles larger than the target cut-off are rejected and returned to the grinding zone, while sufficiently small particles pass through with the gas stream.
This process effectively reduce material heterogeneity and improve the accuracy of the final PSD analysis.

Equipment Schema
After the micronization step into the spiral jet-mill the product is transferred to the dynamic cyclone system that utilize a high-speed classifier wheel that creates a centrifugal stress field. Particles larger than the target cut-off are recovered into the “Coarse powder collector”, while sufficiently small particles pass through with the gas stream and are collected under the cyclone filter (i.e. Fine powder Collector).
Particle Classification Explained
Particle classification is a sorting process that organizes medicine powders by size. This is vital for treatments like inhalers, which require very specific, tiny particles to reach the lungs. We use a fast-spinning wheel that acts like a gatekeeper. It uses force to catch any pieces that are still too big and sends them back to be crushed again. Only the perfect, smallest particles are allowed to pass through. This ensures the final powder is uniform, consistent, and works exactly as intended for the patient.
