Spray Drying

Spray Drying

Advanced particle formation for molecules that demand more than conventional processing.

Technical Overview of the Spray Drying Process

Spray drying is a technology that transforms a liquid formulation — solution, suspension, or oil-in-water emulsion — into a dry, free-flowing powder through a continuous, single-step process. The liquid feed is atomized into a chamber, where small droplets contact a stream of hot air, inducing instantaneous solvent evaporation and yielding solid microparticles of controlled shape, size, and morphology.

Across pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, and cosmetic applications, spray drying can be an effective solution to improve the aqueous solubility of poorly water-soluble molecules, enhance the stability of sensitive compounds, and engineer microparticulate systems with tailored release profiles and applications. Our process development approach uses DoE, ensuring reproducibility from feasibility through scale-up. For highly potent APIs (HPAPIs), we operate within a fully closed isolator system, guaranteeing operator safety and environmental containment without compromising product quality.

Every project begins with a thorough assessment of the feed formulation: homogeneity, stability, and viscosity must be optimized before processing. We systematically define the process parameters (inlet temperature, feed rate, nozzle diameter and atomizer configuration) to achieve the target particle size distribution (PSD) and the required product quality attributes for each specific application.

Spray Drying

Selecting the Right Platform

We operate two complementary spray drying equipment, covering the full development lifecycle from early feasibility to pilot-scale production. Both units support open-cycle and closed-loop configurations for organic solvent processing, two-fluid and pressure nozzle atomization, and are fully CFR 21 Part 11 compliant with complete GMP process documentation. The choice of the right equipment is driven by batch size, development stage, and the physicochemical profile of the feed formulation — a decision we support with dedicated feasibility work and formulation expertise.

APT-2.0
R&D Spray Dryer
+

Our laboratory-scale spray dryer is designed for rapid, flexible formulation development with minimal material consumption. Its highly configurable architecture — interchangeable glass and steel components, mini-cyclone for sub-gram batch recovery, optional fluid bed — allows seamless adaptation across diverse early-stage workflows. The APT-2.0 replicates industrial process behavior at laboratory scale, generating reliable data for technology transfer and providing a solid foundation for subsequent scale-up activities.

APT-5.0
Pilot Spray Dryer
+

Our pilot-scale spray dryer bridges the gap between laboratory development and industrial production. Built to full industrial specifications in a compact footprint, it delivers product quality equivalent to large-scale manufacturing — making it the ideal tool for late-stage development, clinical batch production, and process validation. Modular stand-alone architecture and remote monitoring with configurable alarms ensure process continuity and operational flexibility throughout extended production campaigns.

Spray Drying Explained

Spray Drying Explained

Spray drying rapidly turns a liquid preparation containing an active ingredient into a dry powder in a single step. Fine droplets are atomized into a warm chamber: the liquid evaporates almost instantly, leaving behind tiny, uniform solid microparticles. This technology is safely applicable even to potent compounds by processing within a fully closed containment system. We use this technique to produce powders with different characteristics for different applications: spray drying is useful to improve dissolution properties and stability of the drug, or to obtain controlled release drug delivery systems.
